It is a good camera – yes. It’s the beginniner level for Canon’s EOS line.
And it is the XSi the new one ^_^ And if you have the money – buy the 12 MP as new 14 MP are already coming out. The XSi is a little more expensive but the added benefits kind of out weigh that.
That being said, I own an XTi and love it. Pretty much everyone does – it is the most used camera on flickr.com. go to flickr.com and go to explore -> camera findr This will show you reviews and photos taken with this camera so you can see what people are doing with it.
It’s definitely nice, and Amazon has some good packages for it. Just consider the XSi before you buy.

It is an excellent camera, it’s great for a beginner…. With it you can learn the basics of ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed. The quality of the photos with this camera is excellent.
The kit lens which comes with the camera is also quite good. It’s wide to normal length is great for beginners. Some say it’s not a good lens, but they are not taking the time to learn how to use it properly.

It’s not the XTs, It’s the XSI, Gosh.
I agree though. You should get the rebel XSI, it’s only a little more expensive, and you get a few more megapixels, a larger screen, and live view. The XTi is 650$ you might as well, get the XSI for 700$ with the same lens, except it has IS which is better. Why don’t you get the Canon Rebel XTs?
It is newer than Xti and has the live view finder and 12 MP.
